Geography

The curriculum coverage objectives can be found here.  You can also click on Intent, Implementation and Impact to find out more on each of these areas.

Intent

The intent of our Geography curriculum is to deliver a curriculum that is accessible and engaging for all learners. We encourage children to enjoy learning about the world around them and to understand their place in it. They will develop knowledge, through curiosity, about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deeper understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. They will develop an understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Through carefully planned lessons from Curriculum Maestro, Children will understand contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places (both terrestrial and marine) including their defining physical and human characteristics.  From outdoor learning, children will develop fieldwork skills to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences to deepen their understanding of geographical processes. They will interpret a variety of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs and to communicate findings in a variety of ways.

Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is sequenced, with the help of Curriculum Maestro, to ensure coverage of all of the Key Objectives across KS1 and 2. However,  learning begin in EYFS where they begin to understand the world around them

Geography often leads itself as the ‘driver’ topic for our curriculum in English, where we try and match books to the topic and therefore study contextually throughout the wider curriculum.

Curriculum Maestro for Cornerstones, provides a blueprint for creative, varied, engaging lessons which increase our children’s knowledge.

The structure of our curriculum allows for key themes to be revisited and learning cemented.

We also combine School Trips and visits to our school to strengthen children’s learning and offer practical elements of geographical research.

As a school which values reading, children will have constant access to a wide variety of subject specific fiction and non-fiction books, available in geography lessons and Topic areas.

Impact

Children will enjoy learning and retaining more knowledge about Geography.

Children will understand and use the key skills of geographical understanding, understanding how physical characteristics have led to human characteristics.

For most children to achieve age related expectations in Geography.

Children will have a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context.
