Reading at St John Fisher
Our school values reading highly and aims to create active, fluent readers with a passion for books. We use a range of approaches: as you can see above, in EYFS and KS1 we work within the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme and combine their Phonics programme with their Guided Reading to develop decoding, comprehension and prosody skills. Our children have appropriately matched books and also take home longer or more complex books to share for enjoyment.
Our wide range of library areas and focus on reading for pleasure help to develop a love of reading from EYFS to Year 6, something which is celebrated throughout the school where we encourage class teachers to read to their children for pleasure. In KS2, we teach Guided Reading as whole class lessons using rich texts from the Literary Curriculum, ensuring full coverage of all content domains as children progress through each year in an engaging and enriching manner. We strive to link reading lessons and the rich text books throughout to the curriculum topic to create wider connections and deeper learning.
Writing at St John Fisher
At St John Fisher we aim to provide a high-quality writing curriculum that is based on a rich text approach. We believe that books should be at the heart of writing, and we follow schemes developed by the Literary Curriculum, a team of writing experts and moderators to ensure that our students receive a well-rounded writing education.
Our writing curriculum is designed to develop a range of writing outcomes in each unit, with an emphasis on embedding grammar skills into extended writing pieces. Throughout the units, we teach and reinforce grammar skills, which are then used in the final piece of writing.
We also ensure that our writing curriculum is linked to our topic-led curriculum wherever possible. This provides our students with the opportunity to apply their writing skills in a range of contexts, making the learning more meaningful and relevant.
Our aim is to foster a love of writing in our students, equipping them with the skills and confidence to write effectively and creatively in a variety of contexts.
